We’ve barely been on California soil after a long week at New York Fashion Week S/S 2017–and although we’re excited about trying the trends we saw there, we still have to wait 6 months! So, looking back to NYFW six months ago is where we find our fall/winter 2016 inspo, and we’ve made a list of what we’re loving. Our list includes our giddiness to include glitter back into our lives (hello, Drew Barrymore from the 1998 Oscars, where have you been?), and the return of neon glam that includes that electric powder blue eyeliner we’ve been waiting to buy, but wasn’t sure when to wear it.
Shine on you crazy diamond
Kicking off our list of trends we’re loving for fall, we are going to start with the long-awaited return of glitter worn on the eyes. This look isn’t just a conservative tap of glitter in the corners of your eyelids–this is a full on glitter extravaganza.
Burberry just released beautiful gold and black multi-colored Shimmer Dust collections ($25 each) for the eyes and face, and also a collection of glitter nail polishes to add to your festive look. Gold and silver metallic pressed shadows are also thrown into the mix so you can transform into a metallic goddess this upcoming season. Glitter was also spotted at the Fausto Puglisi and Giambattista Valli runway shows.
Valley of the Dolls
On the runways of Dior (above), Carven, and Nina Ricci were lashes that are just in time for Halloween. This daring lash look is part Tammy Faye, part Twiggy, and part that scary doll that you had when you were a kid. We love it on Kendall Jenner (above), but do we love it on ourselves? Yes, but when the occasion is right. Pair the crazy lash look with glossy black or bordeaux matte lips, and you’re ready to watch American Horror Story.
To get the look, Maybelline has conveniently released the Spider Effect Mascara (as seen at Jason Wu NYFW F/W 2016), for all of our spikey spidery lash needs. The rubbery tapered wand is designed to apply a generous amount of product, and with small rubberized spikes, you can direct your lashes into any direction and separate them. It took about two to three coats to get the runway look, and about half a bottle of makeup remover to get it off. We still love it.
Electrified lips hit the runway at Jeremy Scott (MAC’s Candy Yum Yum shown above), along with crease eyeliner, which is becoming a big trend this year. Full brows are here to stay, but with a more glossy finish. We’re also seeing a trend of brands releasing brow gels, including Charlotte Tilbury and throughout the drugstore .
At Fendi, we saw some very interesting splashes of color, especially bright on the lips, but the eyes were unique with swirls of burgundy eyeliner, dots of pink, orange and different shades of blues. Makeup artist Peter Philips describes this creation as “A posh girl going to Burning Man”.
We love the wide range of poppy colors of Marc Jacobs gel eyeliners ($25), and the Mermaid Hair Don’t Care gel liner from the Sephora Collection ($8) is calling our name with the creamy formula that works great in the inner rim of the eyes.
For the lips, we are in love with the cool kid brand MILK MAKEUP’s lip color in Gnarly, a bright matte fuschia pink ($22).
Winter is Coming
The Perfect365 Beauty Squad all agreed that dark, vampy lips are what we look forward to the most during fall and winter. At the Rodarte NYFW F/W 2016 show, dark, matte–almost black–lips were in the haus.
Both matte and glossy dark lips were seen at the shows, and some were a gorgeous metallic matte shade. We finally have a little versatility to play with rather than the mattes we’ve been wearing all year. NARS has a great deep color range in their Audacious Lipstick satin finish line ($32), including shades Bette (as seen on the left), Liv, and Deborah.
If you prefer a comfortable matte in a deep shade, try Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution lipstick in shade Glastonberry. You can top off your matte colors with a clear gloss to get the glossy effect you desire. We love the Malin+Goetz Mojito Lip Balm ($12) for a lasting uber-glossy look.
Metal on Metal
On Instagram, metallic lips are on the scene. Kylie Cosmetics fans are obsessed with the metallic shade Reign ($18, above), and if you can get them, there are two other shades, King K and Heir, that are equally as gorgeous.
Other awesome metallic lip products include the new Jouer Liquid Lipstick shades ($18), and drugstore favorite Milani Cosmetics also has a range of liquid metallic metals that are only $8.99 each. We love the look of metallic lips as it give the illusion of a plumper pout–especially if you dab a bit of clear gloss on top.
Looks we hope go away…for good
The following list is a bit of something we decided to throw in as beauty trends that we hope fade away–quickly–as the fall season rolls in. Take note that some of these looks have nothing to do with the season, but rather are trends that we’re sick of looking at.
- Sharp, too bold Instagram brows. We’re not going to name names, or even post a photo of what we are describing. I think you know what we’re talking about. Crossing fingers that softer brows are on the horizon.
- Dewy Foundation. A ton of top brands just came out with cushion compacts. Great. Now put them away (until next summer). We are all about flawless matte skin this fall/winter.
- Clown Contouring. Or, just contouring in general. We are not opposed to bronzer or highlighting, but creating a map of all of the area codes on your face looks a little too overdone.
- Gray hair dye. Cute for a minute. Just wait until you get older, then you will never want to see gray hair again. Dusty soft rose, auburn with a pink undertone, cinnamon, and rich browns are hot for fall this year.
